Why is it that Grandparents succeed where others sometimes fail? Why do Grandkids naturally look to their Grandparents for love and advice? And why does their advice make so much sense? It’s because YOU are their best example of mature responses, and you are teaching them how to cope with life everyday. Let them read you: their personal and alive “instruction manual” (don’t we wish they had handed those out in the hospital when we were born?).

Grandparents: Make yourselves known to your Grandkids:
It is a Godly thing to let yourself “be known” to your Grandkids and others. Christ’s command to us was that we were to get to know Him: follow Him, obey Him, love Him, and worship Him…in a personal relationship. This is the same concept. The psychology of Aging states that humans long for personal relationship. In sociology, the love relationship is the basis of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The foundation upon which we build a successful life is LOVE. Love requires us to know others and to be known by them.
Success in Aging® Concepts:
In short, we (every age group) should be diligent when it comes to social isolation. Young people who experience bullying on social media, midlife adults who over-work and under-socialize, and seniors, the disabled, veterans and the widowed who are at risk for various reasons, must be encouraged by those of us who are good at it. It only takes a bit of extra effort to call or text someone we haven’t heard from in a while or whom we know is lonely.
Di’s suggestion: Get out all the games you own and look a few new ones up, then invite a friend of any age to a game day or evening. Brighten up the space where you are playing, and include as many others in-person or on-line in at least a 2-dimensional interaction (FaceTime, Skype, etc.). Make some snacks and hydrate your way into pleasant conversation, drawing each other into a warm circle of friendship. Enjoy the knowledge that you have made a difference in another’s life and well-being!
